Many of the bars in Abu Dhabi have over friendly regular clientele. A little strange for a Muslim country, but interesting never the less. A mixture of ladies who are Chinese, Russian, Ethiopian and from the 'Stans. No bank accounts, no regular residences and shady "customers" leaves them vulnerable to being robbed, hurt and even gang raped. None of this ever reaches the police. Who is to blame? The hotels for getting them visas, the agents for getting them tickets, the landlords for having 10 women to a room or the women themselves for coming?
The dangers of pregnancy in the UAE for an unaccompanied woman whatever her profession who cannot prove she is married are also documented. A recent case with an airline stewardess has gone very quiet in the press. I expect she has done a runner like the Radio 1 DJ from a couple of years ago.
If you are Chinese, pregnant and single on a visit visa and have severe abdominal pain, what do you do? If you are lucky you have friends who take you to hospital and get you seen to and risk prison in Al Wathba rather than die. If you are not then you get acupuncture and a quick walk around a car park. Fear of arrest and the Government Hospital system can cause foolish decisions. Perhaps not this time, but the desert is a large place.

What was the Radio 1 DJ episode about?
Also: what would be the status of a UK tourist, say, who had to visit a doctor while over here, and discovered she was pregant?
It's all a slippery slope to wedding ring and hymen checks on arrival, IMO.

Don't remember the name of the DJ. She just stopped doing the breakfast show one day and nobody said anything, which was odd. Then a couple of months later she turns up in an interview in Time Out where she states that she left due to being pregnant while single.
I also wondered about the status of a European visitor who knows she is pregnant and has complications while in Dubai.

Thanks. Btw are you still in the UAE? I am compiling a short guide to UAE blogs, and mentioning if people are still in the region.

Sorry, I'm gone now. Trying to get back without much success.

What I can't fathom about Dubai and Abu dhabi is - how come they are desperately trying to get us Europeans over there into their tourist hotels and turn a blind eye to whether we are shagging outside wedlock when the housemaids who are being raped by their UAE employers + sons of are treated like pariahs and locked up on notorious Al Wathba and such places. Any answers?

Why isn't it illegal for foreigners to shack up together when sharia law dictates that it is illegal for unmarried resident couples to have sex. It's amazing in dubai (the prostitution capital of the Middle East) that some poor housemaid can be treated so badly for being a victim of some arab bastard's abuse.

As a single woman living in Abu Dhabi I read these posts with some interest. I'm Canadian and must say myself and many other "western" women here find it quite offensive at the way European men in particular are found "frolicking" hee hee, with these women of the night. Those of us who work here in "respectable" careers have to succomb to the goings out of these women and put up with it as though we're invisible. God knows some of them have been put in difficult positions financially and are doing whatever they can think of to make some kind of money, but on the other hand, I'm fed up with seeing them out, polluting some of the more "respectable" drinking establishments here in Abu Dhabi. Sure, money talks and well, let's face it, I suppose it's difficult for many men to SAY NO to their advances. So, What i'm trying to say in short form, men: keep your pants on, then you wouldn't be impregnating them (and by the way, how many of these women are purposefully getting pregnant hoping to be taken care of by a (what she perceives to be, outstanding British citizen) hurl! and to the women, go work in a bloody coffee shop, just make sure you keep your hands clean.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is aware of this, can’t believe someone like the BBC hasn’t got a hold of this. I met a young Filipino girl outside a supermarket, she was tearful and begged me for a little money. I asked what had happened to her? She had come over via an agent in her home country. As soon as she arrived at her charming very wealthy Arabic gentleman’s home her passport was locked in his safe, the $800 a month she had signed a contract for turned out to be $200. Her window barred room was locked and she wasn’t allowed to leave the house. Two weeks later she was raped, she managed to escape with help of the house cook but with no cloths, no job, no money and no passport. I spoke to a Filipino work colleague to see if there was anything I could do to help, like contact the Philippines Embassy? Her answer "don't waste your time, this happens to hundreds of young girls every year" The Philippines Embassy know this full well but don't want to upset the U.A.E officialdom as the money coming back to the Philippines is worth too much to a poor country. So what did I do, tried to find her again to give her some more money (couldn’t) and quit my job to get out of this immoral, hypocritical cesspit A.S.A.P. Oh and I forgot to mention the bruises and burn marks on her arms from Mrs. Emirates, (they were fresh, she showed me) who was so angry that this little slut had put temptation in the way of her devout Muslim husband. Now I’m not saying there aren’t bad people in every country, but in most the authorities would at least do something.
